Waste Management

As you can imagine, recycling is not our top priority on a day-to-day basis and most of the population in Uganda ends up burning their plastic waste or leave it on the streets. This is not a sustainable solution, however burning seems to be culturally inherited. By our waste management initiative we try to change people’s perspective on their plastic waste.

First, we organise a monthly cleaning action where 40 women, together with Rushaga community school children (around 200 students), and staff of the Ugandan Wildlife Authority pick up plastic waste in and around the village.

After we collected the plastic waste, we are trying to make building materials from it. The research is still ongoing and we are still trying to find the best way to use the plastic in buildings.
